Numbers
Standards for writing numbers, figures, and numerical data.
Numbers
#
General Rule
Generally write numbers one to nine in full but use numerals from 10 onwards. This is just a general rule, use your common sense for what looks best.
#
Consistency Rule
Don't mix styles. For example:
- Incorrect: 'they were aged nine to 11'
- Correct: 'they were aged 9 to 11'
#
Starting Sentences
Never start a sentence with a numeral. However, please note that this applies to 'flat' numbers only. Dates, currencies, times and percentages can still be written in the usual format and don't need converting into words.
#
Examples
Flat numbers at start of sentence:
- Incorrect: "15 people attended the meeting."
- Correct: "Fifteen people attended the meeting."
Acceptable at start of sentence:
- "£15 was the cost of admission."
- "2023 was a difficult year."
- "3:30pm is the scheduled time."
- "25% of respondents agreed."
#
Best Practices
- Be consistent throughout the document
- Use common sense for readability
- Consider context – technical documents may use more numerals
- Follow the ten rule unless consistency requires otherwise
