Our Story

UK Transcription began in 2004 as a modest internal project at the University of Bristol, where five students started transcribing interviews for university researchers. What began as a small student initiative quietly expanded over the years, growing organically into a team of over 100 transcribers. By 2007, the company had evolved sufficiently to warrant full-time staff and incorporation as a limited company, hiring its first dedicated project manager. This steady, incremental growth has been built on a foundation of professionalism and accuracy that has earned UK Transcription a strong reputation across both academic and professional sectors, with some transcribers remaining with the company for over 20 years, dating back to those early Bristol days.

In 2008, the company established a dedicated commercial office in Brighton, operating from there for the next decade. Interestingly, without any particular intention, most of the in-house transcribers and support staff came from the university's philosophy department—for reasons that remain somewhat mysterious even today. The nature of transcription work naturally lends itself to remote operations, and the company gradually shifted toward home-based working well before it became widespread. When COVID-19 arrived in 2020, 90% of staff were already working from home, making the transition to fully remote operations remarkably smooth. The company now operates completely remotely with a virtual registered office, while maintaining that every team member is UK-based and paid into UK bank accounts, ensuring data security and consistent quality standards under UK jurisdiction.
